Pennington County is located in western South Dakota. It is named for John L Pennington, a United States Senator from Alabama.
The seat and largest city is Sturgis. This county is located in the heart of the Black Hills. In addition, Mount Rushmore lies in the heart of the county.
Pennington County borders Meade, Haakon, Jackson, Oglala Lakota, Lawrence and Custer Counties in South Dakota as well as Weston County in Wyoming.
Main highways through the county include I-90, I-190, US-14, US-16, US-16A, US-385, SD-40, SD-44, SD-240 and SD-244.
